If you have access to leaves in Fall, and a mulching mower, spread them over your lawn and mulch them in. Decaying leaves provide a high nitrogen fertilizer for your grass, and they are CHEAP!
Alternatively, any commercial fertilizer that is high in nitrogen is best. Fertilizers have ratings on the front of the bag (ie 10-10-10). This is the N-P-K rating of the fertilizer.
N = Nitrogen
P = Phospherous
K = Potassium
For grass, look for a fertilizer with a higher number in the "N" place. You could try fertilizers that have higher numbers in the "P" and "K" places and see if they perform as well.
Good luck!

Also, organic compost.
