The lights didn't work either. The power windows, the radio and the fan for the heat worked. The battery is new. Ten minutes later it started (Subaru 96 Legacy)Any ideas?

Whoever put the new battery in didn't tighten the cables right. They might seem tight, but aren't. It wouldn't have started later if the alternator was bad.

Try having the alternator checked out sounds like you have bad alternator.

check the battery cables down to the starter and make sure the are tight and check for corrosion on them.

it doesnt happen often but they do sell ignition switches at the auto parts store (just in case)
