That remains to be proven, there are however over 100 mermaid tales across the globe most written at a time when we could not easily communicate. Leading one to believe there is either a mass hallucination or some basis in fact.

The way I understand it, sailors noticed that manatees have breasts and so related them to human females. That is the only connection to a woman, so I guess someone came up with the name "mer" instead of "man" perhaps to replace the pronoun her. The word maid of course is a suffix. Conjecture, of course.

of course they are -- a friend of mine was a mermaid and she was hired by disney to sit on a rock and say hi to kids. you had to call her "ariel" though. if you called her jessica -- her real name -- the disney employees would shout obscenities at you.
