What's keeping poor people in this country from working?

Nothing. As a matter of fact, most people that are 'poor', have jobs and pay taxes. They do not like welfare either. Some, even though they are employed, still have to use food stamps to feed their families. Instead of getting good health coverage at work, they have to use medicare and what ever health plan their state has. Can you actually name any one on welfare? No one can get welfare any more for life, like it used to be. And if you are on welfare, you are required to get on job training, even if you are disabled. Call any welfare office to get your facts straight. That is the problem with neo-cons like you. You do not check out the facts first. Welfare is the only entitlement program, that you are required to look for a job to get. Oh and one more thing. Most people on welfare do not vote.

I'm not sure, I hear an awful lot of complaining, they say the economy is bad, we have national debt but we've had it before, were currently at war and the government had to make a very expensive homeland security apparatus to keep Americans safe. Theres low unemployment, but all the loonies get on here and say they can't find a job. I changed jobs after 21 years in 2003, Ive had 3 jobs since, all of my own choosing, all successively paid higher, I don't know what the problem is, ive done fine and anyone that wants to do fine, will!

Some are lazy, some are ill, some are injured, some are mentally imbalanced. Some are just to stupid for words.
Some know nothing else. Many are not even citizens of our country. If they have enough kids they get plenty of money and health care. Why work? Because we let them get away with it!.

it is not necessarily the poor who are on welfare, as I have seen people who are making good wages living good still collecting welfare, and it burns me up as I think it is such a shame, welfare was not intended for the lazy , sorry S,O,B, who is to lazy to work and it didn't happen that way until the Kennedy's came to power,but, J,F,K, got it started and it went like wild fire, now do you see why he is as much a god to the blacks as M,L, K, is?
I don't want to pay some sorry Bas,,,, to sit at home sell drugs and prostitute while I bust my butt trying to feed my family and then they take my taxes for this kind of s,,,,

Some actually have legitamite reasons, like REAL disablilities. I have seen people fake such disabilities, like my uncle. He got injured working in his leg when he was 28. He lived in Kentucky then, and the state would just let him do nothing and get paid for such since it was a permanent injury and slightly(I am probably being nice here) inhibited his walking ability. He then moved to Michigan with his family for a month. As soon as he found out that Michigan was not going to give him money, they moved back to Kentucky. People like this, even familiy members, make me nausiated

I'm pretty liberal, but I agree and you cant pin their lazyness on being liberal or conservative, its lazy. If they dont want to contribute then instead of checks and food stamps how about rice and corn as we have surplusses and remove thei children until they get a job, as even Micky Dees beats a blank

because it's only common sense that if you got 3 kids
a husband dead or just gone and you can't make ends meet
between daycare costs and healthcare costs that the only recourse is to sit on your butt and draw
that is the part of welfare that needs fixed
not all people that benefit are lazy

Why work when there's "free" money?

The answer of course, is that you should enjoy working and work in a job you enjoy. 'else you may have a wasted life.

BTW, don't get "medicare" confused with welfare.

Social programs like welfare, and other "free" handouts have created a people dependent on the government and at the same time these people are the same ones that criticize the loudest.
