Hi, my bunny is 2 months old, and he prefers alfalfa hay to kibbles. If I put kibbles in his dish then take some alfalfa hay and put it in his cage he will run to eat the hay. He loves it more than kibbles & veggies. Is this ok, if he still eats some kibbles & veggies.

I feed him about a handful or two of alfalfa hay per day. He is a dwarf bunny.

The alfalfa hay should be more of an occassional treat for your bunny, rather than be its main food source, even though you are still feeding it some kibble and vegetables. Kibble for rabbits and other small animals are designed to keep them healthy for longer, because of all the nutrients in them. Just like any pet food.

I was always taught that rabbits NEED hay every day, but that you are better of feeding "grass or timothy" hay than alfalfa. This gives them the roughage that they need in their diet. I also grew up on a farm and we had rabbits for years( my sis bred Rex) and we gave them hay everyday. I have been told that timothy hay and pellets should be the daily staple of your bunnies diet. fresh greens are ok occassionally, but can give them diarrhea if overfed. Treats are ok too in moderation. This is the rule I went buy when I had pet bunnies( dutch) and they were super healthy. :-)

As long as he eats his alfalfa/food pellets. Hay is a great thing for rabbits to have. They eat of of boredom, so they won't get HUGE if they eat hay as snacks.
