i first got my period when i was 12 and it was normal for about a year to a year and a half. then i lost some weight (5'8.5" and 120 lbs.) and then i didn't get it at all for a few months. since then, it has been sporadic. i've heard you can screw up your cycle if you're too skinny but now i'm 5'9.5" and 140 lbs. and i'm still not regular again. i've also heard running might have screwed up my cycle since i've been running for the last 2 years.

any ideas? do i have a problem?

A messed up cycle can be caused by a number of different things:

RAPID weight change (loss or gain)
Anemia
or (if you're like me)
You might just have weird periods!

I reached puberty about the same time you did, though I was rather short and chunky, but mine, once I reached 13-14 started becoming REALLY irregular.

If it's bothering you way too much, ask to be put on birth control pills.

You are right, losing weight and excessive running can screw around with your cycle. As long as you are a healthy weight and eat properly, I wouldn't worry too much. It can take up to ten years to get into a really solid cycle and some women are irregular for their whole lives. If it is unusually heavy when you have it or something really doesn't seem right then talk to a doctor but otherwise I wouldn't worry. I was irregular for about the first four years and everything has settled down now. The best advice I could give if you are having them irregularly is to carry some tampons or pads with you everywhere so that you don't get caught out.

You seem to be a healthy weight for your height and you are right that if you exercise a lot or are really skinny your periods can be irregular. The best advice would be to talk to or go see a doctor and confirm that there are no problems. You don't want to ignore this now to find out later that you can't have children when you're older. Good luck!
