Most states have laws regarding what sort of animals you can have as a "pet" without having a special liscence. I would THINK that a bat would be under the catagory of a "wild" animal and would require a liscence to be able to legally own. Having worked for many years in the pet industry, I have never personally seen anyone ever sell bats, or own one for that matter, unless they were a liscenced wildlife rehabilitator.

Adopt-a-bat just lets you donate money, you don't GET a bat. Most states (if not all) make it illegal to own certain "wild" animals such as bats and skunks, since they are such a high carrier of rabies.
We had skunks and found this out. The problem is, they're illegal (bats too) because rabies is fatal to humans. The only way to test for rabies is to do an autopsy, which means the following:
1. Your "pet" is seized and you are fined for having a "potentially dangerous animal" without a license.
2. Even if you have DOCUMENTED PROOF of rabies shots (which we had for our skunks), your animal is STILL taken and destroyed.
3. Your animal is dissected, tested for rabies, and you STILL have to pay a fine, and might be taken to court.
It sucks. :(

In the USA bats are federally protected and can not be owned as pets. A wildlife rehabber can have a license to have them, but the average person can't. Sorry.
