I wanted to buy several seasons of tv shows on dvd at amazon. I saw that U.S. Amazon used "Seasons", while Amazon U.K. used "Series", so what the difference between buying a tv show "series" and "season"?

If you see two different box sets (using your 24 example) with potentially the same thing, read the description of it to find out what it covers. I don't think it would say 5th series on it because that don't make sense to me. that would probably be some boot-legged, pirated copy of it. Best bet would be to go for the season box set

A season is just one season of the show, usually fall to spring. A series is all the seasons of the show. For example Full House has 8 seasons, so you would have to buy 8 box sets for the entire show. Or you could buy the series, which should include all 8 seasons. Most times it is cheaper to buy the series, but it doesn't come out until all the seasons have been released.

A season refers to the episodes made in a year, and a series is the total run of a show.

It may also just be semantics...we may call it season here and they may call it series in the UK so in essense your question could be right...series 5 of 24 is the same as the 5th season of 24.
