Marketing purposes - having such a big-ticket item will get people talking about the Sams Club Holiday Catalog - exactly like you just did. Also they hope the media will pick up the story and give them lots of free publicity.

They don't want to come across as a poor man's store. They are trying to make a point that you can get nice things at Sam's Club.
