They can be fun but a lot of work. They need to be cleaned like 3 times a week minimum and they can get under the smallest spaces like as small as the crack between the floor and a closed door.

Ferrets make amazing pets. However they require ALOT of work and attention. While they sleep most of the time, when they are out and about they are very mischivous. You will need to block off any area that you don't want them to go because they get into everything. Well I have had to do that because I rarely ever keep him in the cage. Ususally only when I go out. It's not that bad once you get used to it. And they don't smell that bad as long as you bath them a couple of times a week. You can also get their glands removed to help with the smell. They also require nail trimming about once a week. (well mine does, his nails grow fast). And check their ears too, if they are dirty just swab them with a q-tip and clean them. They are also very much like a cat and require a litter box. But some don't use them. Mine uses newspaper. Also don't make the mistake of thinking they will get along with many other animals. (although I'm sure not all ferrets are the same) At his old home mine used to play with the cats. And I figures, well he's a rodent he should get along with my rats.... lol, wrong! Thank god I was there because he wold have killed them. Pretty much anything a cat would chase and kill, a ferret will. Well there you go... Hope I was able to provide you with some useful information. Good luck.

OOPS!!! I just read that you should only give your ferret a bath once a month at the very most because they have oil glands that keep their fur soft and their skin dandruff free. Giving them too many baths strips the oils and makes the ferrets skin very itchy, and their oil glands go into overdrive. So disregard my previouse comment about baths. The only exception is if they have fleas or have gotten into something dirty or stinky.

It depends on what you want from a pet. Ferrets are like having a 2-year-old. They can get in SO MUCH trouble before you know it. But they're also a lot of fun and very playful.

Initial investment is approximately $400~$500 for the ferret, cage, food, litterbox, litter, shampoo, hammock, toys, chew treats, etc. and don't forget they need to go to the vet just like a dog or cat for rabies and distemper shots.

They need a LARGE cage and at least 1 hour of CLOSELY SUPERVISED play outside of the cage EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Monthly baths, nail trims, make sure they don't eat something they shouldn't or get stuck behind the cabinets or in the couch.....they're the right pet for some people, but not for others. I don't recommend having them with children under 12 years old.

I have had my ferret since Christmas of 05, and she is such a sweetie. They don't stink at all, just like any other pet, they have their own unique pet smell. Also, there is a coat spray that keeps their coat sleek and nice looking, as well as deoderizes.
They are pretty litterbox trained, and only sometimes do we have to clean up a little poop of the floor.. and it doesn't stain or leave a mess, it's quite easy to get off the floor and or carpet.
They are also a lot of fun, they play with you a lot. If you can get them going by dangling something like a little tea towel or something ininfront of them, they will play forever. They are so cute to watch, and tons of fun.
The only thing is, they can be trouble makers/ and or not know what's bad for them.. if you aren't confident enough letting them roam your house, keep them in a pen.. they might learn to climb it, but they can choke on almost anything.. and they do enjoy taking things (keys, glasses) and hiding them in hard to reach places (under dressers)

Anyways, I would get one, they are so much fun!

I had a friend who had three of them; she kept them in large cages made of wood and chicken wire, with cedar shavings in the bottom. They had been trained to use a litter box. I was at her home many times, and never noticed any odor from them. While I don't think I personally would want one, I know that she absolutely adored hers!

I've heard they stink, but if I could get one, I definitely would. They're not like MEAN or anything. If you have enough space and enough $$$ then you should be fine. GOOD LUCK!!
