Depending on where you keep the pumpkin it can start rotting in a day. If you have it in doors near a heater or in warm room like kitchen, that speeds up the ripening time. Most pumpkins don't rot completely at once but start off with little spots here and there. If it doesn't ruin the design of the carving, cut that nick out and fill with Vaseline. It will make it last a little longer.

Depends on how hot it is where you live. I live in Arkansas an in the northern part of the state people started carving 2 weeks ago.

We always carve ours halloween afternoon, because unless it is really cold out, it will start to rot within a day or two.

we carved ours yesterday just in time for Halloween we don't wont it to go bad right away so we do it 4 days before. have fun
