It's been at least four or five years since I've read the novel. But I have read it twice--once for a poster presentation and once for a ten page paper--so I think I can recall the basics of it....but doesn't it start out in a framework? Meaning doesn't the reader meet Janie coming back from a funeral (??? or maybe just coming back into town from being away) in her overalls not caring what her neighbors think or what the latest gossip is. She's a different person than the person they knew. A different person than the woman that had lived beside them for years if not decades. She was transformed. Whether it was a positive or negative transformation....EVERYONE was curious when they saw her. They wanted to know where she'd been, what she'd done...and what she was thinking looking like that. I think seeing her from the neighbors' eyes first instead hooks the reader if you will. So when Janie starts telling her story to one particular friend or confidante, the reader wants to be in on the secret too.

if u read it i would just recommend thinking on what part of the book (beginning) caught your interest and use that as a narrative hook, besides i would think that with many people having many different interests, there could be more than one specific narrative hook, meaning that different parts of the beginning will catch the interest of certain people.

Janie strives for independance and is kept from that independence by Jody. Jody uses his power over Janie and she rebels and finds that she is able to talk for herself and gain independence though this ability. Janie also finds power and the power comes in the form of silence. Janie now know that she has the power to speak and be heard by others or the power of the sound of silence.
