It can happen. Sometimes when I take pictures with my camera in the dark (outside) the picture reveals some stuff floating around. And if you pay close attention while the flash goes off you can actually see these things with your own eyes, atleast I do. I know that they are specs of dust.
As for the "orbs" theres a lot of hoaxes and lies out there and people who would do anything for the attention. So I'm really specticle on the whole thing but lean mostly to the fact that they are NOTHING.

Orbs are various objects that reflect light such as dust, moths, metallic residue, etc. the problem with Most Haunted is that they'll accept most any bump or creak as a ghost. On Sci-Fi channel here in the states we have Ghost Hunters (Most Haunted is shown in reruns on Travel Channel new to us but not our British cousins). The approach Ghost Hunters use is very different. The Atlantic Paranormal Society which is the organization shown on Ghost Hunters is made up of believers who approach the haunting with the eye of a skeptic which is why they don't consider orbs to be any kind of evidence, they don't use mediums and they will attempt on site to disprove the typical creaks and bangs. In just two seasons they've come up with more evidence than Most Haunted has in 7 seasons such as capturing "shadow people" on film and getting very good EVP's and even recording an image on a thermal camera which has yet to be explained. They have also debunked or cast doubt on various famous haunted places such as the ShadowMan at the West Virginia penetentary and the haunted library in Indiana whose name escapes me now.
Don't know if people in GB get sci-fi (i believe they do) but if so check out Ghost Hunters.

Orbs are just light refracting off specks of dust in the air! Most Haunted has been running for a few years, visited some of the `most hunted' houses in the country........yet no ghost has been filmed! Derek Acorah is a charlatan!! My Garden shed has more psychic ability!!!

A lot of people answering this question have come up with logical explanations for what a suspected orb could be. Reflections, dust, bugs etc. But sometimes there is no logical explanation for these anomalies. My sister and I attended the National Ghost Hunter's Society convention years ago in Salem, Mass. There are certain protocol and notes on location that need to be adhered to in order to insure that a certain investigation is credible. After taking a workshop, my sister and I went on to investigate several places as well as inspect old photos. We were surprised to find orbs in many of our pictures, including vorteces and plasma. Dust, Maybe. However, we were also surprised to find that after conducting many investigations at the same cemetery in Massachusetts, that we definitely were able to capture orbs, vorteces and plasma on film. All of those investigations were conducted at the same time at night, in like weather conditions. Some orbs would be flying across the frame in a streak of blue light, one even looking like a glowing blue ball, bouncing on the ground 6 or so times. My brother in law is a professional photographer in Chicago and I showed him our album and a skeptic. His opinion was that in some of our pictures, the anomalies captures on film could not be explained.
As for the orbs on Most Haunted (I watch that show), it is my opinion that they are authentic anomalies for many more reasons than they appear, float across space and then disappear.

this is what I heard that most orbs were specks of dust or from a dirty camera lens rather than anything supernatural. after I moved into an apartment saw a flashing red light which was unexplained until in the morning saw it was a light flashing from a smoke alarm.

Some could be specks of dust, of course, but others are not so easily dismissed. Sylvia Browne (famous psychic) says legitimate orbs are always a good entity- they're angels.

I am definitely for the dust theory. I believe in spirits, but have never known them to appear as orbs.

I have several photographs that I have taken with two different types of digital camera where the image displays 'orbs'. They are dust, insects, light anomalies, reflections etc. Spirit manifestations, my ar*se!
