You get a handful of mud or soil and mix it with salt and vinegar. Once you feel a slight soaking texture, you then rub around the surface area. Leave it for approx. 5 mins and then rinse off. You will notice a shinny mantlepiece... I hope thats useful

toothpaste!! brings it up shiny and polished with no abrasion - honestly - really works :) as for the mould dilute bleach with 3 parts water to kill the mould and remove stain or use fungicide spray (from garden centre) which is better at killing the mould and so longer lasting if prone to recurrence.

there is a company called prosoco, they make several types of cleaners for brick or stone. call 1-800 255-4255. I'm sure they will have something. then use a sealer to keep it from happing again.like soliaxin pd. I'm a mason contractor and use their products often. They work well, Maybe a brick Yard will give you a sample. I have gotten them before.

Yikes, this is a tough one.. You have to be careful with Marble!.. Go to an antique store and usually (if it is an upscale one) they have all sorts of cleaners... I would go that route and not chance messing up your mantle!
