Congenital deafness occurs in 1 out of every 1000 to 2000 births, so not very frequently. In 75% percent of those cases there is deafness in the family already and it is caused by a recessive gene.
In other cases it can be caused by illness or infection during pregnancy, especially by rubella. It can be caused by maternal diabetes, prematurity, toxemia, hypoxia.
Similarly, blindness can be genetic or caused by illness or infection during prenancy, prematurity, etc.

I believe it can be both. It can be hereditary but it also can be a random thing. If blindness or deafness runs in the family it can be passed on. But it can also be just a random act due to a cold or something else while you were pregnant with baby, but this is I believe rare. Most generally doctors can't explain for sure why babies sometimes end up blind or deaf. I was born partial deaf. I was born with total nerve damage to my left ear. My mother has degenerative hearing. But my mother's doctor at the time believes that the nerve damage was caused by a cold my mother had while she was pregnant with me. Outside of my mother I am the only one that has hearing problems in my family. I am hope my baby doesn't have a hearing problem when he is born.
For ll3ajjvjja_ll3ell who said its rare that babies are born that way unless the mother is a heavy drinker, smoker, or drug user during her pregnancy. This is not always true. I know several women who drank, smoked, or did drugs while pregnant that have had normal babies none blind or deaf. My mom never drank, smoked, or did drugs while she was pregnant with me and doctors don't seem to think that it was hereditary that I ended up totally deaf in one ear.

Don't worry, your question was not stupid at all. I'm 6 weeks pregnant, and I freak about about everything. This is my first time, as well as it might be yours...so questions about your un-born are never stupid. As far as the deaf and blind thing...it's rare that babies are "born" that way, unless the mother is a heavy drinker and smoker, and or drug user during pregnancy. If you are doing everything correctly, there is no reason why you shouldn't have a healthy baby!! GOOD LUCK!!! And keep praying for everything to work out. Don't forget to take your pre-natal vitiamins. And something that is good for brain and eye development is a pill called Expecta Lipil. You can find it in the pharmacy. Any doctor will tell you it's an excellent source for babies development. : )

Hello,
Are you pregnant, or just wondering for future reference? A lot of birth defects are hereditary, and depend on the genetic make up of of both you and your mate. You both can have genetic testing if you are worried. Although, being born deaf or blind is not always a birth defect, nor is it always hereditary. When I met my husband, he had a child from a previous relationship who is blind. Before we decided to have children, we had genetic testing done to make sure that we would not have to endure the same heartaches as he and his ex. When all was well, we conceived a son together. To our surprise, Ethan was born deaf. Despite our efforts to pinpoint the cause, no one has been able to conclude the reason for his hearing impairment. When he turned 2, my husband and I decided to conceive again. Amazingly, we now have a happy, healthy troop of sons. Two of them are impaired, two of them are not. Sometimes, there are no answers. For us, we would not trade a thing for our precious family.
I hope this helps,

i often asked my the same question. I was born deaf and until the age of 3. My mother took me to the childrens hospital in philly where i had a surgery on my ears. The doctors told my mother because of her smoking while being pregnant with me, is why i was born deaf. Thankfully the surgery worked and im only 28 % deaf. I still ask to this day if this can happen to my children and no one really can give me a straight answer. My brother was born first and had no complications other then ear infections, and no one in my family has had any problems with their ears.

ummm...it can happen to anyone but mostly happens when someone in the family has been deaf or blind. It just depends on the genes in both the partner and how the DNA meets with one another. There are no "chances" for say... it just happens. God chooses who he wants to be "special". There is no telling really.
sorry

I think there are some genetic components and some environmental factors like being exposed to certain toxins during pregnancy.
