the word "colony" makes this question open to many answers because some other countries set up long long ago. If you are writing a term paper, they are probably asking your opinion of the first colony. A couple of years ago in school there was a choice to do an assignment acrediting Columbus or Leif Erickson as the first person to "discover" north america, but neither of them set up in present day U.S.
I distinctly remember from eighth grade U.S. history class that first English Colony in the United States was Roanoke Island near present day North Carolina settled by Raleigh (the capital of NC and thats how I remember)

I can't remember his name, the Pilgrims landed and chose a leader, who I think history reports as the first colony, however there is still a great deal of controversy over that, since the Indians were here already and most of the Eskimos. Then you have the conflict between the Spanish, the French and the English about who was first. Add the Vikings and whoever Sasquatch is ...

Some ancient Norseman, probably. Since in central Colorado they found a site that was originally though to be an ancient Native American village, but on further digging have come to the conclusion that because of all of the artifacts it was actually a Norse village about 1500 to 2500 years old.
