I have a tarantula, and she just got a new tank. I needed new bedding and the pet store is closed. So I picked up some cedar bedding at Wal Mart. Is this OK for my tarantula?

Do not use cedar, it is toxic to many invertebrates. What you should use depends on the species of spider. I have included links below with that information. If you have nothing else to use for tonight, paper toweling would probably suffice until tomorrow.

I wouldn't use cedar bedding for ANYTHING. Cedar is BAD BAD. I have seen aspen shavings at walmart. I would either exchange it, or just use paper towels for now. You can also use other types of substrate. I always liked the kind that looks like a big brick of dirt...the brand name suddenly escapes me...but you add water( warm or hot) and it expands into a huge amout of substrate. HTH

....not with cedar shavings as they are toxic to many spiders......

A terrarium with an inch or two of damp vermiculite or a mixture of soil and sphagnum moss (but not with cedar shavings as they are toxic to many spiders) on bottom provides an ideal habitat. (Burrowing tarantulas will require a much deeper layer.)

I got it from:

I know that it is REALLY bad for hamsters and stuff like for their respiratory system, but I don't know about your tarantula. I will do my research and I will try to get back to you. P.S. I think it's awesome you have a tarantula-- where'd you get it?
