Last winter the blower motor in my 1988 ford escort worked fine. A couple days ago i tried to use it and it would not turn on. I checked the fuse and it looked fine, but just in case i replaced it with a new one. It still would not turn on. I then went and got a new blower motor $35. I put it in and then start the blower and it turns on for a sec but it is blowing then stopping then blowing like it is stuttering then i turned it off and then on again and nothing , i t wont turn on. Does anybody have any ideas on what i should do next? What could be causing this? it is starting to get really cold up here in maine. Thank you in advance

There is a relay in the relay box under the hood for the blower motor. It should be clearly marked. Swap it with the relay right next to it (that is the horn relay). If it works then, you have a bad relay. You can test the wiring there at the relay point.

pin 30 is 12v power at all times (blue/orange)
pin 85 is the ground (black)
pin 86 is the switch wire (blue)
pin 87 is the wire to the motor (blue/white)

Use a test light to verify the switch wire is "hot" when the switch is on.

FROM THE MANUAL--------------

The heater blower motor switch resistor is located on the passenger side of the A/C evaporator housing behind the glove compartment.

The heater blower motor switch resistor has the following features:

The assembly is located on the passenger side of the A/C evaporator housing behind the glove compartment.
Three resistance elements are mounted on the resistor board to provide four A/C blower motor speeds.
Depending on the heater blower motor switch position, series resistance is added or bypassed in the A/C blower motor circuit to decrease or increase A/C blower motor speed.
An overheating protective device (thermal limiter) will open the resistor coil circuit when the temperature reaches 121°C (250°F) interrupting the blower motor operation in all speeds except HI.
The thermal limiter cannot be reset and is not serviceable.

Hope that helps!

My 99 is doing the same thing, I called the local ford house and they said it was one of 3 things, check the fuse, which you did . Replace the resistor ( I don't know what it is) they said to check it next, and then the blower motor, which you have already done So now try the resistor, hope this helps.

there is a short in a wire to the blower. when it kiked on then off, on, then off again, it burned one of the wires going to the blower in two.if you know how to read a diagram, go to a parts store and buy a Chiltons or a Haynes manual for your car and it'll show you what wires to check on the blower. It'll also tell you if there's an in line fuse you don't know about.

Yes. The blower has to push the air thru the heater core to get warm air.
