to let it dry? I've turned heartwood that was wet and it cracked after a few days.

Heartwood is the part of the tree with the most moisture, so it's going to take the longest to dry. Let it dry within the body of the trunk if you haven't sawn it out already; give it at least three months - longer if the tree is more than 12 inches in diameter.

It takes 6 months to a year to dry properly.

you need to learn the proper drying methods. experiment with it and try using a plastic bag around it to let it dry. i have done that too and had things crack. learn to experiment and don't give up til you nail it. also go to lumber mills and take a tour and see how they dry stuff out and ask questions while there to learn how to dry your own stuff for personal use. they just might help you out.
