Because a Fundamentalist preacher named Jerry Falwell held a press conference and stated that Tinky-Winky was gay because he had a purse and had a triangle on his head. More accurately, Falwell suggested that the Teletubbies were part of the "gay agenda" to legitimize homosexuality by making effeminacy look okay to small children. I don't really think that much of anyone, aside from Falwell, actually believed that, though.

Cartoonhero55, has it right. But the reason is this, the pink triangle is a gay symbol that goes back to Nazi prison camps....if you were gay you would get a pink triangle batch on your uniform and if my chance you were also Jewish the Star of David would be added over the triangle. Just before the sexuality scandal, they introduced the lavender ribbon for the next generation of AIDS awareness....and as we know people still think of AIDS as the Gay disease. Well, lavender being in the purple family, ignorance came up with the idea that a purple triangle would have to be for Gay.

because the people who started that rumour are fundamentalist idiots. They look at the rainbow, the purple and the triangle, put three and three together and come up with nine. They were grasping at straws to accuse Public Broadcasting of making young children prefer "gay" things. Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Jimmy Swaggert and such were all calling the Teletubbies (poor Tinky-Winky) gay. (Like they're the models of humanity...ick ick ick) You'll notice its pretty much died out, thank Gods. Tinky-Winky is soft, round, pleasant and syrupy. All TV presences should be so innocuous.

Because Jerry Falwell (who takes the fun out of fundamentalism) said Tinky Winky was promoting the gay lifestyle because of the triangle on it's head and the purse it carried.

because some televangelist (jerry falwell, i think?) said tinky winky was........get this because he's purple (teletubbies are asexual not boys or girls) he has a triangle, a gay symbol on his head (the pink triangle is a gay symbol because the nazis put pink triangles on gays in concentration camps) and he carries a purse (it's a magic bag)..........he's an idiot, but i support tinky winky whole heartedly!!!

The Tele tubbies may not be gay but they certainly are a bunch of drunks . Probably would have to be a little bit that way inclined though to get into one of those stupid outfits. My kids hate them

Doesn't the purple one carry a purse? Now I know we have the whole metrosexual identity thing going on, but damn, even they take a bit of a stand in regards to purses.
And please, a "man purse" is a gay idea (no offense to the homosexual crowd), thereby making him gay...

Because they are close minded and ignorant and want to condemn anything different. Also becase he is male, carries a purse, is purple, and has a triangle on his head. (btw all crossdressers aren't gay).
