Marriage is a thing of property, offspring, and ownership. In many places contracts came before ceremonies and had little to do with religion. In point of fact there are fewer religious marriages, even now, than there are contractual marriages, throughout the today's world.

I would presume that in the case of the Torah, Adam and Eve would have no need of marriage--at least before the fruit was shared.

marriages started as slave contracts binding women to men with a sketchy history at best. we know romans practiced marriage for producing legal heirs. they also had prostitution, concubines, boy sex slaves, all kinds of sex outside the legal marriage as well. why christians want to think god had something to do with it is beyond me. the hebrews did establish new laws esentially giving women rights and forbiding prostitution that extended to the bible and koran. hebrews were big on women and children rights. this should in no way be regarded as equality though. the male with the marriage contract still had right as he saw fit to abuse women and children plenty which still continues in our culture today.

Marriage began on the day the cave-woman sent the cave-man out on a desperate and deadly quest to catch her some wild Quail's eggs. Upon his triumphant return with said eggs, she said they weren't good enough and dashed them across the rocks. She then told him that she'd already eaten and that he was sleeping on the "log", and promptly fell asleep on the Mammoth skin (by the fire).

From that day since, we have learned our place! God bless our matrimony!

when men decided women should only "be with" the
individual who owned her. the men wanted to make
certain they never had to raise another mans' child.
the idea of mutual fidelity was not even considered
by them. that is strictly a women's issue and is
still being resisted by the men.
