Thanks a billion if you can help me with these two questions. They puzzle me and I am not completly sure which multiple choice is correct. Thanks again

The first one is easy. Remember that atoms have no net charge, and electrons have a charge of -1. If you remove two electrons from an atom, you have removed -2 charges from that atom, and so the ion that is formed must have a +2 charge.

The second one is a little tricker, but if you have a periodic table handy, it's pretty straightforward. OK. Metals will form compounds with non-metals. Lithium is a metal and when it reacts with other things it will form a positively charged ion. You need to look at the atoms in your list and determine which of those atoms is a non-metal. Atomic number 10 is Neon. While that's a non-metal, it is a nobel gas which doesn't easily form compuonds with anything. Atomic #11 is sodium, another metal just below lithium. Atomic number 13 is aluminum, another metal. Atomic number 17 is chlorine, a very nice non-metal which can react with lithium to form a compound.

Hope this helps.

I believe the first one is +2 but I'm not positive. I say +2 because the atom you're referring to [I think] is neutral, and if you take 2 electrons away, there will be 2 more protons than electrons.

I'm not sure about the second question.

I hope I helped some. If you know anything about predicting states of matter in reactions, I'd love your help.

If it losses two electrones it will be +2

Li will combine with chlorine (atomic number 17).

lose electrons and it becomes less negative,,,,or positive

so +2

they combine with atomic number 17, Cl....Li loses electrons, Cl gains one
