Some broad generalizations about the 4 quantum numbers used to describe electrons in an atom:

n, the principal quantum number, has the greatest effect on the size and energy of an orbital. The larger the value of n, the larger the orbital size. (n also has the largest effect on the orbital energy.)

l, the angular momentum quantum number, determines whether you have an s, p, d, or f orbital. In a sense, it has the biggest effect on the shape of the orbital.

ml (wish I had a subscript), the magnetic quantum number, describes the orientation of the orbital in space. For example, p orbitals come in sets of 3..the px, py, and pz orbitals. This is related to the fact that there are 3 possible values of ml when you have a p orbital.

ms is the electron spin quantum number. There are 2 different values for ms, and this corresponds to the fact that an atomic orbital can only accomodate a maximum of 2 electrons.
