The name PT Cruiser includes the initialism PT, standing for and designating the car's platform as well as production code. The name also recalls the 1930s line of Plymouth Trucks known by the "PT" moniker.

Here's the info they have at "PT Enthusiasts.org"
According to Chrysler, PT stands for Personal Transportation
PT was also the code-name for the PT Cruiser during its development (during which time, it did not have an official name). The code name came from 2 places, one from the program that the PT was developed as an off-shoot of... - PL (also known as the Neon). The T is though to stand for what the PT was, a 'tall-car'.
Other possibilities that float around are that PT stood for Plymouth Truck since the PT was meant originally to be part of the Plymouth line (the decision was made before launch to change the PT to a Chrysler since Plymouth was expected to be cancelled). Proof of the Plymouth connection is no further than the Plymouth Prowler. The PT grill, bumpers, and fender contours, as well as interior details are quite similar to the Prowler.

The PT doesn't stand for anything in particular. It is the body style. I am a Chrysler Technician here in Spartanburg SC. Have been for 7 years and work on them everyday. Everytime an auto manufacturer comes out with a new vehicle, they have to give it a body style id. It's mainly for dealership use when any information is needed to identify anything on that particular vehicle.
