The timeless debate: what do YOU think the lyrics of "Hotel California" are really about? I heard a hundred answers / explanations. The 2 most popular are heroin usage (the one I personally subscribe to) and some sort of Satanic cult (I guess I can see how some of the lines could sound that way). Or possibly something else? Let's hear some interpretations!

Hotel California touched on many themes, including innocence (and the loss thereof), addiction to drugs, death, the dangers, temptations, and transient nature of fame, shallow relationships, divorce and loss of love, the end results of manifest destiny, and the "American Dream".
Ive also heard it is abiut the California state mental hospital.

My gut feeling is it was a overview of the music business & SoCal which the Eagles were engulfed in at the time. Like a hotel in Calif they couldn't check out from.

I heard them at a concert introduce the song. They said it was drug abuse but it could apply to other things. It's non-specific so it can be different things to different people.
