Exploration of one's sexuality doesn't imply homosexuality. It's simply the way one learns who or what they are. It's perfectly normal.
Too, there are those who want so desperately NOT to be gay, that they go beyond the exploration phase, claiming heterosexuality when the reverse is true.
Also, in this exploration phase, one might find themselves bisexual.
In any event, finding out who you are does take a bit of exploration, especially if you're not completely sure about your own sexuality. Pure hetero, Scared of being homosexual; these may lead to an exclusively heterosexual lifestyle, but to define yourself honestly as gay or bi, usually takes a bit of discernment.

He could just be curious. Although he's made a big leap towards an "alternative lifestyle." In the end, he may not choose that lifestyle. It seems simple enough, but I'm sure he's confused as anyone and he has some serious thinking to do.

give him time to let what happened sink in and let him get used to the idea. You are probably well excited at the moment but dont push or you could push him away a wee bit further.
Just dont talk about the incident until he brings it up or you both get drunk again. When you do get drunk again let him make the first move. If you dont he will think everytime you are in his company you will want to pounce on him.

He might just be curious, he might be confused, or he might not be ready to accept that he's bi or gay. Respect how he feels. You can't change where he's at or make him feel something other than what he feel. Express yourself and then listen to others express themselves. Every type of relationship works better that way.

It's called DENIAL! I'm not gay but my girlfriend is...I had that on a t-shirt once. LOL! Maybe he was drunk and that is the only way he can try new things!

Either he was seriously "just curious" or he is in complete denial.
OR
he could be considered to be "on the down low," cause I truly believe it is not just for the brothas.

Definitely sounds like he's curious though. Don't push him on this. Let him figure it out for himself but be there as a friend.
