I sooooo curious about how to do this, because I hate transfering my files from my laptop to the desktop, just to print it. (I know about the home network thing, but is there another way of doing it?) My printer is a Brother printer w/ "Network built-in".

Well, I don't know how to have your printer work directly in network mode. but there is a way to have multiple windows computers that are networked use one printer that doesn't have buillt-in networking ability. and that I do know how to set up. and since you can print to that printer with at least one of the computers as long as these two comptuers are running windows this trick will work.

First thing you'd do is from the Computer that can currently use the printer, in this case your Desktop, go in to the "Printers" control pannel and then right click on the printer icon and pick sharing and select "share this printer."

and from the other computers, your laptop in this case, go to
"My Network places" if it's runnign XP or "Network Neighborhood" if it's running an eailer version. doubble click on the icon with the name of the first computer (the Desktop) and then you'll see the printer icon there along with any files shared. right click on it and pick connect. the computer wll go through installing the printer and there you go as long as the desktop is turned on you can print from the laptop.

If it is networked, and you have taken an ethernet cable and connected it to your wireless router then, once you have determined the ip address of the printer (do you have a blue button? try pressing it three times in succession - it should print the inbuilt settings) then you can print directly by telling your printer settings to print to that ip address.

So - do you have a wireless router with a spare port? Get an ethernet cable and get that wired up. If you only have a wireless adapter that has no spare ports then either upgrade to a full router or you will have to go have the PC on too.

Do you know what the ip address of the printer is? Maybe in the manual? Or fiddle with the menus, l;ook for networking, might display it there. Or the blue button trick. Probably 192.168.x.x where x.x is something local to you.

So, now select the properties of your printer and change the address of the printer to this ip address.

Thats the basic idea.

Can you tell us the model of printer?
