It was so many reasons the Civil war Started. The North wanted to end more states from joining the Union as slave states. The South wanted to keep the North from being a safe haven for run away slaves. The South wanted to share in the revenue that the north was generating from its industry . The final straw was the election of Lincoln. The south stated that if Lincoln was voted president then they would succeed from the rest of the country. It was an issue of state rights versus the right the country had over the states.

It was a question of states rights that evolved from what the South felt (and rightly so) was unfair taxation. Slavery did not enter the equation untill the war was not only started, but the North was in trouble and needed more teoops. That was when Abe decided to be a good guy and free the slaves. Slavery actually was abolished as a tactic by Lincoln rather than because it was the right thing to do.

The Civil War was indeed inevitable because its major cause was economic, not slavery. It was a contest for who was to control the rich lands of the West, the industrial North, or the agrarian South. Two completely diverse areas trying to live under the same system of economics and law. The clash was inevitable and resulted in the Civil War. Chow!!

freeing the slaves was an after thought - the reason we went to war was because the southhern states wanted to spread slavery to the new southern states entering the union and the north said no additional states were to be slave states. as for lincoln he wanted the negroes returned to africa. time and history painted the freeing of the slaves story

It looks like it was slavery, but it was really States Rights, since the North was very dominating of the South making the federal government institute laws that favored them over the South.

It began as a fight over states rights. Conflict over issues of how much control the federal government should have over the states, industrialization and trade. Slavery wasn't the issue in the beginning, that came later. Revisionist historians just like to say that it was.

1) Economics: The northern states wanted to abolish slavery, but the southern states were dependent on slavery economically
2) States' rights verses federal law: Southern states claimed federal law was infringing on States' rights.
3) Morality. Those who claim slavery were immoral vs. those who claimed it was their right.
