Some friends and I plan to travel across the US in a camper van over the summer of 2007. Has anyone some good ideas/iteneraries they would like to share with us as we don't know where to go and what to see/miss?

I've done it and it is great! We started in Boston, Nyc, Philadelphia, Amish country, DC, Atlanta (great), Memphis (one of favourite), New Orleans, Austin, Carlsbad Caverns (great), Arizona - Grand Canyon, Phoenix, Tuscon, California (San Diego - great, LA - different, San Fran - brill, Yosemite, Portland - Crater Lake - awe inspiring, Seattle, Montanna (Glacier Peace Park - fab), Rushmore (so-so), Yellowstone (great), Chicago, Toronto, Montreal. We also went to Santa Fe, New Mexico -- can't remember where in the trip but it was a brillant place!

Yes, I have done it. See the Grand Canyon, Swim in the ocean on both coasts, Las Vegas. Cripple Creek , Co is a very interesting little town with some great sightseeing roads out of town. The Great Lakes. We tried the route 66 thing- it was just a run down path of nothingness and we had to drive like 35-40mph, so we jumped back on the highway.

It will give you a list of truely unique swimming places across the US, like Big Bend where you can river tube in circles. Many of these swimming places are attached to campgrounds.

Whereabouts are you leaving from? If you are leaving from the northeast or southwest......there's only one way to go....route 66...if coming from the east, start at Chicago armed with a couple books about the highway...if starting from the west...start @ Santa Monica Pier.......I did this from the west until Oklahoma City and I will tell you this, it was the most amazing ride I have ever done (and have driven over a million miles across most of the states). It is a rare peak into true Americana that is a once in a lifetime experience.

Wisconson Dells is great... I just went through there on a trip Michigan to Montana..
AVOID Chicago at all costs infact that whole state is INSANE with highway tolls... I would NEVER go through there again.. my husband says the tolls are really collecting for "THE CHICAGO MOB" I dont know if thats true but it was INSANE stopping and forking out money over and over and over and over....

Did the West coast bit. Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, etc, etc. Would recommend all those for sure.
