Dear Friend, If you want something unique for your niece, I would like to suggest a beautiful outfit or a few which you can make. Parents tend to appreciate clothing for their baby espacially if it's different and hard to find. Give her clothing which varies in sizes so that she can wear them upto a year or two. Then you can find a beautiful pairs of socks to match or soft baby shoes. You can then place them in gift boxes or bags. The best part is this: In another gift bag, you can purchase a couple tins of her formula along with pretty bottle, pretty bib/s, baby rattles, stuff toys (small ones which she can hold when she is about 3 months) a blanket and bath towel. They will definitely appreciate the clothing and the formula the most. Take Care Angel Doll

My sister just turned 14, and I got her a necklace, the movie The Notebook (sells for around $10 US), and the book The Truth about Forever by Sarah Dessen. She also likes gift cards (from itunes, Best Buy, and other places) and makeup (for Christmas last year, I took her for a teen makeup application lesson and manicure at a local salon--she loved it).
I like to get her stuff that she doesn't get from everyone else. Kids her age love gift certificates, songs from itunes, etc., but they also like books. And, no one buys older kids and teens books anymore. Seriously. Books have been lost in the technology/fashion shuffle.
Other book possibilities for a 14 year old: Berry, Liz, The China Garden; Bray, Libba; Cabot, Meg, How to be Popular; Dessen, Sarah, Just Listen (& others); Kantor, Melissa, Confessions of a Not It Girl; McCafferty, Megan; Meyer, Stephenie, Twilight; Noel, Alyson Art Geeks and Prom Queens; Moriarty, Jaclyn; Sparks, Nicholas, the Notebook; Von Ziegesar, Gossip Girl; Westerfeld, Scott, Uglies.

I'd recommend gift cards to places like Claire's, Vanity, Old Navy, DEB, even just Wal-mart.
14 year olds are much pickier on clothing and toys are an absolute no-no. As part of the gift, take her shopping with the gift card(s). I'd recommend getting a $20 one to a clothing shop (ask her mom what stores she likes best) and a $5 one to Claire's, so she can get some hair accessories for her new outfit.

kind of boring, but a gift card is always very much appreciated by the recipient...
If she has an iPod, you could get her an iTunes card...
Gift certificates to the movies are fun--give enough so she can take a friend and get some popcorn and stuff.
I think girls this age like that store Justice?
Offer to take her for a massage, pedicure and/or manicure or perhaps a makeup lesson (if she doesn't yet use makeup, this can help her learn how to apply it correctly so she doesn't overdo it).
What about a pretty journal and a nice pen so she can write down all her innermost thoughts/dreams.
Good luck!

Giftcard for clothing store, music store or Target (where you can buy everything)
There are things that every girl that age will enjoy, like a mini backpack (denim, black or khaki) or a squishy (those microbead pillows) or anything that looks like it goes in a dorm room (because by 14 years old, you THINK you're old enough for college - lol)
Other safe bets? Sock with cute/smart stuff on them... or socks with silly frogs, cows, chickens, or candy bars on them. Depending on her personality, virtually anything with Happy Bunny on it would be a hit...
If she likes crafts, try a latch hook kit she can make a throw pillow out of or a beading kit that she can make jewelry with.
Bath and Bodyworks stuff is always popular with this age group... get a shower gel and matching lotion or body splash.... nothing too heavy, but just light and airy and simple.

DVDS and CDS are safe bets if you know what music and types of movies she likes. If not safe bets are always cash, gift certificates. Or perhaps you could take her out for lunch and have her pick something out.
