Go to tools > language > set language, if you want to set the default language to French.
Or go to insert > symbol and then pick the letter you want, i.e. "é" . Then click the insert button once the character is highlighted, and it will show up in your document.

ctrl + comma then c for that cedilla (*the comma hanging on the c)
ctrl + ` (that mark in the left-hand corner of the keyboard) then e (or whatever vowel) for accent grave
ctrl + ' (with the quotation marks button) then your vowel for accent aigu
sorry I forget how to do the trema and circonflexe
