The person above forgot to mention you can make an .html-file, while ''saving for web''. Then you can make your layout in photoshop for your website. If you select the slicetool and draw squares on your image, more numbers will appear. each number stands for a new image... You probably alreaddy seen a website that builds up in pieces (like an image that is made of many pieces, and some pieces load faster than the other pieces) this is an example of working with slices to make a website faster in loading...
It also comes in handy if you just want to change a certain slice of your layout: then you only have to change that particular slice. Mostly you use this in combination with a webdesignprogram like dreamweaver...

The slice tool in Adobe Photoshop is meant to slice your image into 'slices' or multiple portions. You can then choose the 'Save for the Web' option under the File Menu and output the slices which will be saved as separate images. The Slice Tool is ideal for pple who need to design websites and come up with a Webpage containing images while eliminating the need to do any programming. Photoshop slices your images, saves the individual images and compiles the code for you.
