Sorry about the long list, I've tried to keep it short! My flatmate works for Waterstones, and I'm a book nut as well, so you can imagine what our house is like! I can't just recommend one!

I've just thought of some more.

Gone With The Wind- Margaret Mitchell.
Shadow of The Wind- Carlos Ruiz Zafón.
The Great Gatsby- Scott F. Fitzgerald.

What can I say? I don't know your tastes or age which can all have a bearing on any recommendation. However, some favourites of mine:
All Jane Austen - witty, and superbly crafted
For Sci-fi, all Ray Bradbury - thought provoking
For crime, all Patricia Cornwell, but particularly her 'Scarpetta' books. She shows a masterly grasp of forensic science
Tolstoy's War and Peace - a long but very satisfying read
All Monica Dickens; my favourite is 'No More Meadows' (she was the great granddaughter of Charles Dickens. She married an American and moved to the USA with him; she ended her days in England, in a thatched cottage on the Berkshire Downs - her books reflect all the jobs she has done, the times she has lived through and the places where she has lived).
Whilst mentioning Dickens - anything by him; he was a popular author in his day and his work has stood the test of time
For the fifty somethings - any book by Anne Tyler
All books by Mary Wesley, especially The Camomile Lawn
For something really up to date - The Time Traveller's Wife (I forget the author's name, sorry)
I could go on forever but I won't - there is plenty here to get you started. Good reading!

Female Authors. Jean M. Auel (The Earth Children Series). Crime, Minnette Walters, Patricia Cornwell, Janet Evanovich,
Male, Crime,James Patterson (Alex Cross Novels) R Wingfields (Frost Novels) Better to read than watching on TV. Adventure Bernard Cornwell (Sharpe Novels), Patrick O Brian (Aubrey/Maturn Novels) Clive Cussler (Dirk Pitt Novels)
I could go on some are easier reading than others but if you do read any of these authors find out the start and read them in order.
