Depends on which area your yard has the most sunlight. Since the sun rises in the East and settles in the West, then if your house is facing the North it would not matter if you planted in the front or back since light would be equally distributed in the front as well as the back yard. Depending once again on if you have more shade in the front or back due to trees. But if your house faced the West, then you should plant things in the back yard since you will get the most light there. It is the opposite if your house faced the East.

Some plants require shade others a sunny location. Vegetables and fruit-growing trees or bushes grow best in full sun. If the backyard is sunny, sun loving plants grow faster there, is the front yard sunny, then your sun loving plants thrive at this location. The need for sun or shade of a particular plant determines the location.

Some plants need mostly shade and some plants need so many hours of sunshine. If your yard has lots of tree's they will make for a lot of shade so buy plants that require mostly shade. If where you want to plant has mostly sunshine buy plants they are tagged for lots of sun. If you plant them where they are not suppose to be you will know within a few weeks they will either burn up from to much sun or get sick looking from lack of sun. You can always dig something up and place it in a more suitable spot in your yard if this happens. You will quickly learn where they seem to thrive the best.
