I worked at a psychologist's office and can tell you a 6 year old can be the adult in the house! It is so much about environment and circumstances. Some of it is about emotional and mental ability and understanding but others can live their whole life with the maturity of a child.
If you have a child with superior intelligence in a house with a dependent adult that lacks social, emotional, and other skills the child will become the care giver...so to answer your question...a person can stay "child like" their whole life!

yes, thats fair, 18 is a big kid. I think maybe you're actually asking, when does one become an adult mentally? Which occurs usually sometime around 21-22 or when you leave home and get a job.

Some people never learn the mental and/or social skills to cope well in the adult world. However, when a young person does, then I guess you can say they have grown up.

I am hopefully one the people who have become a "big kid". I believe persons who grow up to be "big kids" are blessed in their own right as seeing the world in their own quirky way(s). I think that without the "cushion" of psychologically being able to see life and the world as a circus or a weird/funny cartoon will make one's days truly bleak and unfathomable. I also believe that God, Whomever He or She may be has a wonderful sense of humor. God truly is the ultimate Big Kid. The more easily one is able to roll with the punches that come your way in every day life, the more God will give you the ability to see life as a funny/weird/wonderful learning experience and journey.
I believe that my ability to see God and myself as both big kids has made my life such that I enjoy getting up every day and seeing what neat and/or weird things will come my way. It helps me be the best that I can be for my precious animals, my life-mate Bill and my precious disabled angels that I work with. God has given me a life that is a BLAST...I love and worship God as the gorgeous HUGE orange and white cat that I think He/She truly is and at night before I fall asleep I enjoy our brandy and cigar talks.
Yup, being a big kid is great! I hope when I leave this life and finish my community service before sitting comfy and snug with my loved ones against God's silky, gorgeous fur that we are ALL big kids in Heaven!
