There's Goodwill (used stuff) stores everywhere and I just wondered what purpose they actaully serve? I mean, they are for the lower income people, and I went in there with a friend the other day, and you pay close to retail price for stuff. I thought they were there to help the less fortunate. What do they do with all that money they make off of the stuff they get for free, I know, like Salvation army gives stuff to kids, does meals on wheels and all kinds of other stuff, but I've never heard of Goodwill doing anything. So what do they do with all the money they make?

Goodwill Industries is all about people working.
We are one of the world’s largest nonprofit providers of education, training, and career services for people with disadvantages, such as welfare dependency, homelessness, and lack of education or work experience, as well as those with physical, mental and emotional disabilities. Last year, local Goodwills collectively provided employment and training services to more than 846,000 individuals.
We believe that work has the power to transform lives by building self-confidence, independence, creativity, trust and friendships. Everyone deserves a chance to have these.
Goodwill provides that chance.
Goodwill Industries will enhance the quality and dignity of life for individuals, families, and communities on a global basis, through the power of work, by eliminating barriers to opportunity for people with special needs, and by facilitating empowerment, self-help, and service through dedicated, autonomous local organizations.
We at Goodwill Industries will be satisfied only when every person in the global community has the opportunity to achieve his/her fullest potential as an individual and to participate and contribute fully in all aspects of a productive life.

I am shocked that Goodwill has not been investigated by the govt by now,,They profits for Goodwill are in the millions,,,They do very little for the community in times of need,,,They do give mentally disadvantaged people a place to feel they are part of the workforce, but they do not receive minimum wage,,I believe they are window dressing for this greed based profit driven company,,Their latest new stores look more like upscale shoppes than they do a Goodwill,,The prices do nothing but go up and now they are not even printing coupons anymore!!,,,I feel that with the economic downtrend a few years ago they took advantge and raised their prices!,,,For the community?? NO!,,,I would like to see the CEOs of Goodwill and what their lifestyle is really like,,,

Actually, they are trying to sell the stuff to high income people to pay for their programs. One of their programs is sheltered workshops for disabled people. One of the autistic men in my son's group home works at Goodwill and he loves it. He does a lot of different jobs and they help him feel great.

Sheltered workshops, which are places where mentally/physically disadvantaged people can get employment. Though usually they are paid by the piece, not by the hour. My brother used to work for them.
