Today a Dear Abby letter used the story of a pregnant teen being beaten by her abusive father as a veiled attempt to encourage readers to vote against parental notification laws like California’s Prop 85. A search for a news article or police report to corroborate the letter was unsuccessful.

It’s important to note that Prop 85 would NOT prevent a teen from having an abortion. Prop 85 is about a parent’s right to know that their underage daughter has already had an abortion. Also there is not one, not two, but THREE ways that Prop 85 provides for at-risk teens to avoid having their parents notified about their decision to abort their unborn baby. I believe this is why people against Prop 85 avoid these facts and instead play on people’s emotions by relying on horrific stories of incest and abuse that may or may not even be true.

The truth is that teens make mistakes and need the love and guidance of their parents when they do. Who could take a position against that?

Hard to say. I'm inclined to agree with you, and I think a lot of people have the knee-jerk reaction of wanting to legalize unlimited abortion for reasons that really only affect a small minority of cases.

I know many women who've gotten abortions, and not a single one of them were raped or the victims of incest. Not one. They were just inconvenient pregnancies-- that's the usual reason women get abortions.

And I'm extremely disappointed to hear that Dear Abby is being subversive in this way.

Here's another generalization you'll see a lot (even, I'll bet, among these answers) : "All pro-lifers (Oops.. my bad... I forgot it's "anti-choice," not "pro-life") bomb abortion clinics, don't believe in exceptions for rape and incest, and hate women!"

One of the posters mentions a fanatical pro-lifer who bombs clinics... "Now which group is extreme?" Right. Because as we all know, all pro-lifers like to kill people. Don't be absurd. What a ridiculous generalization.

It's sad how narrow minded some people can be.

Three days before my sons 18th birthday, he decided to get his ear pierced at the mall. I had to sign for him because he was not 18 yet. I certainly would not want my underage daughter to be able to get an abortion without my permission, when my son needs my permission to get his ear pierced. Am I the only one that thinks this is ridiculous.

Also, if there is a medical problem after the abortion, the parents are financially responsible whether they knew about the abortion or not.

Responding to the comment by Grundoon: Pro-Lifers on the whole hate all murder, including the murder of Abortion Doctors and the bombing of their clinics. Yes there are extremists in all groups, thankfully they are very few.

When I read that Dear Abby column the other day, I KNEW it was somehow connected to pop 85. Real slick.

This is how I feel about Prop 85. Although the majority of kids wouldn't be beaten/killed, there is a significant percentage who will. And we have to protect those.

Just because they are in the minority does not mean they don't deserve protection.

I agree that teens need emotional support, but I'm 100% against abortion and it sounds to me like since you could not find anything to collaberate this story it is just another attempt to manipulate society and create a frenzy in the mass hysteria surrounding this issue, why I dont know,my wife and I cannot have children and it sickens us to know that a life has been snuffed out,not a choice but a murder, would I support my daughter if I had one and she secretly aborted her child, yes but I wouldnt like the decision she made, but as years went by and she wondered what her child wouldve been like,I could only hope she could deal with her decision and self anguish

1) It is pro-choice, not pro-abortion. I know of absolutely no one who runs around saying "Whee! Abortions are fun! Free abortions for everybody! Hooray!" We just recognize the need for them and the right of women to decide certain things for themselves.

2.) As for the teen notification stuff, not all pro-choicers feel the same way about it. I don't think that teens over the age of, say 16, should have to have parental consent or necessarily inform their parents, but if there are good, LEGAL reasons why this is necessary then I don't oppose it.

I also second the poster who mentioned those anti-choice people who bomb clinics, etc. WE'RE the extreme ones? Please.

Dr Bernard Slepian ( I may have misspelled his name) was murdered in front of his wife and children by a cowardly anti abortion zealot.

Many clinics have been bombed.

Which group resorts to extremism?????

I did not say, nor did I imply that all of the so called "right to Life" supporters are extremists. But when a question is as slanted as this one is, I have to point out the stupidity of the asker.

What would a zealot Pro Choicer do?...Insist on her right to control her own body.
What would a zealot No Choicer do? (See...I can twist your cause's name) The body count climbs.
Sorry if you don't agree with my conclusions.

I'm quite certain that the term should be "pro-choice", not "pro-abortion". There IS a difference. (Unless you're a narrow minded ideologue)

The simple fact of abortion is that it is killing an innocent human being. If you can argue against that then you belong with any other murderer. We can't help it if it affects your conscience. If you have one.
