These were created in monasteries by monks. The purpose was, as the printing machine had not yet been invented, to make copies of books. Books, therefore, were painstakely copied by hand. Monks had a higher education and so took upon themselves the task of copying and preserving books. Italian monks were particulary dedicated to this. They were done with colours obtained by plants and stones, and gold leaf.

The Romans did from about 1000 to 13000 C.E. The minks copied books by hand and created beautiful illuminated manuscripts. And also by copying these rare documents, monks kept knowledge of the past alive. So basically, the Romans. Hope that helped :).

They were typically created in monastaries, by monks, in order to preserve documents in a time when " barbarian hordes had overrun continental Europe." They were also made for the wealthy, who could afford to purchase them. It was an extremely time consuming process.
They were laid out on parchment paper or vellum, written and drawn with quill pens and a variety of dyes.

Irish Monks -

Quite simply, during a time when Christianity almost completely died out and there was nothing left of organized ANYTHING, there were these secluded monks up in Ireland who wrote and rewrote the bible in these beautifully illustrated manuscripts. Quite simply, these monks did everything in their monastery, by hand. Wicked, eh?
