NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Don't change it! It makes you unique and I wish I had more of an accent! I lived in Chicago my whole life. I bet alot of guys find them sexy! So don't even try to lose it, because once it's gone you're gonna wish you had it back. So please, don't.

Well you don't really get rid of an accent but it just fads away with time. The more you hang around people from there, the more you will adapt to their accent. Start speaking faster and more proper. Say words that have I in them faster. So instead of saying fiiiiiiiive say five and tiiiiime say time. I think it will only help you to work on your accent and the main reason is because your accent may hinder you from getting certain jobs because some people outside of the southern states tend to think less of people with a southern accent so try to work on it for that sake.

I live in Colorado Springs....and I LOVE southern accents. Seriously. Don't change it. Eventually it will just start to go away, and that's when its REALLY sexy because there is just a hint of it left.

You need to speak with a faster pace, that will hide some of it. Other than that, and actively thinking about "acting" a different accent, you'll just have to let it fade.

I personally accents, so it seems those in Colorado aren't as cultured.

Is it your accent that they ridicule? Or improper grammar, perhaps? Your accent will fade with time. I grew up in the Great Lakes area, and had a God-awful accent. After I moved away, within a year or so, it softened right up. One tip: be sure to pronounce ending consonant sounds...the final T, or G, R, D, etc.

I shore hope you ain't got no hillbilly grammar! ;)

i just moved from California to Tennessee, everyone down here has an accent to me. they make fun of my sister and i. don't try and get rid of it, live with it. keep your accent. it helps people know where you're from. you have to show your Kentucky pride and let everyone know what's up. don't be ashamed of it. your accent tells a story. besides some guys like girls with accents.

Accents are hard to lose quickly for most people, unless you spend money on a vocal coach. Really, just try to say things properly (travelin' --> traveling, fixin' to --> going to ((if you say that)), etc.) and study the speech habits of people in your area. Listen to how they say certain words that YOU think makes you sound Southern. Try to say things the same way they do (not in front of them of course). Buy a voice recorder and read paragraphs out of a book. Listen to which words make your accent most noticeable. Try to fix them.

Your accent is part of who you are and you shouldn't be ashamed of it.

If you really do want to lose it, there are vocal coaches that can help you, the same people that help teach actors to speak WITH and accent. Check the local college or university to see if there are acting professors who could help or direct you to a local vocal coach.

The more you hang out with people who don't have your southern accent, the more you'll sound like them.
