A blank verse sonnet is one of the most beautiful forms of poetry out there. Blank verse refers to the meter used for the line. "Of that forbidden tree, whose mortal taste" is blank verse (from Milton). That means that the first syllable is unstressed, and then the second is stressed, which is called a foot. A blank verse line has five feet. I'm going to capitalize the stressed sounds: of THAT forBIDDen TREE whose MORTal TASTE See? The second word of the "foot" is stressed while the first is not. There are five feet like this to a line. It's called iambic pentameter, and when it doesn't rhyme, it's called blank verse. I write a poem to show you how to write I hope it helps you see what you should do I don't give up on class without a fight I have one foot so I need just one shoe. That's terrible, but that's blank verse in ABAB. That means the first line rhymes with the third and the second with the fourth. I write a poem to show you how to write (A) I hope it helps you see what you should do (B) I don't give up on class without a fight (A) I have one foot so I need just one shoe. (B) So you do that four times, but follow his rhyme scheme. Does that make sense?
