Hi...I am a coin dealer in the Midwest. The other poster, though well intentioned, is a little high on the values. Realistically, the coin will range in value from around $625 for a typical used piece to around $2000 for a high grade Uncirculated specimen, or somplace in between for a mid-grade piece. Typically, most pieces we see are worth in the 600-700 range. Take it to your local coin shop/dealer or evaluation. and DO NOT clean or polish the coin; it will reduce its value significantly. Hope this info helped you out.

That year the $20.00 ( double eagle ) gold coin was minted at 2 places, Philadelphia, mintage 170,470 and San Francisco, mintage 2,575,175. Mint mark below the eagle if any. S would be San Francisco. There are a lot of fakes out there, so it must be 34mm in diameter, have a reeded edge and weigh 33.436 grams. Key thing here is weight that usually is the key to a fake. Have a jeweler weigh it for you, or a coin dealer. If it is real, the Philly mint one sells for between $800.00 and $6,000 depending on grade. The San Francisco one retails for $800 to $1,500 depending on grade. You would not get that much if you sold it to a dealer.I am not sure of the mark up on gold coins, due to the fluctuation in gold prices. Check with a dealer who needs to grade the coin anyway.
