I dont think that metal music has had the recognition it deserves there are a lot of great bands from past and present such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest who are still going strong and pulling a phenomenally huge fanbase to every gig they play , this type of music both lyrically and musically is probably the most misunderstood form of art there is and it is high time that metal got the recognition it deserves

When you say heavy metal music, you have to be more specific. If you are talking about the tripe that passes for heavy metal music today like “The Def Tones” or “System of the Down” then, yes, heavy metal is tremendously overrated.

However, if you are alluding to past metal greats like “Metallica”, “Iron Maiden”, and “Black Sabbath”, then no, heavy metal is not overrated. If fact the 1970s to 1980’s heyday of heavy metal is not given enough credit in its contributions to our varied musical landscape.

The virtuosity and talent of the guitarist, bassists, drummers, and vocalists of the 1970-1980’s metal era has yet to be paralleled by today’s so called “heavy metal” bands. Gone are the energetic, non-clichéd, drum playing. Gone are richly textured bass lines. Gone are the elegant and hypnotizing guitar solos that would so enamor the audience for sometimes minutes on end. Gone are the vocalists with the tremendous vocal range that can rival some operatic singers. Every vestige of talent and raw creativity that we saw in spades from heavy metal bands in the 1970- 1980s, is supplanted by cookie cutter bands that write music with the same self-loathing morose themes. Every band uses the same played out power chords. Extended solo work from the guitarist is a thing of the past. Every vocalist now sounds like he is either drunk, is suffering from emphysema, or a whinny prepubescent who is in the middle of his voice changing.

With musical refuse like this coming from the heavy metal scene, it is no wonder rap and hip-hop music is making a marked rise on the airwaves. God I would pay so much if bands of the caliber of Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Queensryche, and even hair bands like Poison, Warrant, and Motley Crue made a serious comeback.

Maybe in the past. The current batch of heavy metal artists are pretty uninspired and sound fairly similar with only a couple exceptations (oh, who am I kidding? It's just System of a Down that has some originality in that genre).

No, I don't think it's underrated but, I do think it is underplayed. I don't know why the radio stations have made such a shift from reall metal music to the rock,pop,metal,pop,hip-hop,pop sound of things. I'm so tired of hearing these kids crying of jr,highschool crushes and their mothers not letting them smoke in the house.
Check out www.Mp3.com they have a pretty good selection of Metal.

it is underrated, it isn't 'cool' to be into heavy metal, and to be fair, bands like trivium and aiden arn't making a good point. metallica will always rule and just look at ac/dc, still going strong with a fan base spanning all generations after 25 yrs. myself i'm a foo fighter girl and think grohl is god but hey! opinions vary! lol i do also think to quote ice t, that anybody who listens to just one type of music is closed minded. but long may rock live!

Most people ignore the musicianship because of distortion being used. A lot of great musicians are in or were in a metal band at one time (since the 70's).
