Below is a link to a CPI (Consumer Price Index) convertor. You can enter a year and dollar amount and it will tell you the price today.

If you bought something for $1 USD in 1950 it would cost $8.40 USD today. That would mean that things were roughly 8x cheaper in 1950 than today. In 1955, however, $1 spent would be the equivalent of spending $7.56 today...and in 1959, $6.96.

So when you say "50's" you might need to be more specific.

A lot cheaper!! I know in like 1946 college tuiton was less than $100 a qrtr and textbooks were less than $10 and people made like 35 cents an hour....that is just crazy!!

you could by a house for about 20 grand. a loaf of bread was 5 cents.

zero, the wages were way less then, so cost is relative!
a burger was an hour babysitting-just like now!
