Yes, it's a pretty major holiday. Even adults, esp. in their 20s and 30s, really enjoy Halloween parties or dressing up to go to bars. I've recently heard that many people that age say it is their favorite holiday, and that we spend more money on food and clothing for Halloween than even for Thanksgiving, which also is quite a big holiday.
If only we gave any thought to its true meaning/origin. But, hey, it's fun.

I'm sure it depends on where in America you are, each town/city have their own traditions. Normally everyone dresses up, the kids go trick or treating and come home with tons of cheap candy. Adults dress up and party but I don't think the tricks they do are in the Halloween spirit.
Athens Ohio (a university town) has the worlds biggest and best Halloween party. All the pubs and clubs there have free entrance for anyone in a costume and the whole town is just one big party. Wish I could go there now

It's pretty much door to door "Trick or Treat",maybe a party if you don't want the kids at strangers doors.A lot of churches don't like the evilness so they put on "Harvest Festivals" where the kids don't where evil costumes, just princesses and cowboys and the like, they get more than enough candy and cakes etc. to keep them in circles for a week.
Halloween is a lot of fun.Schools usually have a day for the kids to dress up.What's dumb is when the adults dress up an accompany their kids and have a bag to beg for themselves, how tacky is that.So. Calif. is great because the weathers warm still .

Yes. Canadians and Americans decorate their houses with hanging skeletons and ghosts, flying witches and bats, and carve jack-o-lanterns out of pumpkins!. The kids dress up to go Trick or Treating in the neighbourhood or have community dances and the adults throw costume parties. It's been part of North American culture for 150 years, although most of the customs stem from various parts of Europe.

Well, for my slice of "Americana" Halloween has always been a major holiday experience. We decorate; we dress up; we buy loads of sweets to hand out; everyone in the neighborhood pitches in to make sure the children have loads of fun; and we all come together after trick-or-treating with the kiddos to mingle; the children play and the adults enjoy a bit of "adult refreshment" and fun. It's truly brilliant... one of my favourite holidays.

Most of the time, yes. Little children dress up and get candy. Adults and teens dress up and go to parties. Some, like me, give out candy. Even teens go out trick or treating sometimes.

Kids dress up and go out to trick or treat. Young adults dress up and go to halloween parties where they drink themselves into a stupor. Anyone older than these two generations stay home to hand out candy.
Here in San Francisco, we go to the Castro and party like there's no tomorrow.
