Societal control. Everyone is controlled by a limited means of how one must live. For instance, girls can't behave like boys, and vice versa, because society will be "shocked" if you do anything out of character.
Self-identity is limited because you're afraid to step outside the societal boundaries to become who you're really meant to be.
People are afraid to behave in a manner that's meant to be their own identity so they stay within the boundaries, because friends, family, communities, society will look down on them.
Celebrities don't care what society thinks of them, so they continue to do things of shock value. Not only does it get them the attention they want, it also gets them free publicity. ;))
Thought-provokers will get reactions of hate from some, and reactions of sheer acceptance by some.
Those that limit their own self-value are those who possibly become drug addicts/alcoholics, prostitutes, pimps, drug dealers, promiscuous, who have lost track of the search for themselves, because they stayed within the limits of how they were suppose to behave. Hence, they've lost all self-worth and have hit rock bottom.
When one loses self-identity, some will go in to depression, because ultimately, they know deep down in their subconscious mind/heart that there's more to life than what they've recieved so far.
This is why there is so much hate in this world. No one knows who they really are. Only those who've stepped outside the societal boundaries, to begin making positive changes for themselves are those who are "really living".

Essentially, society defines what peopel want to do in l;ife, peope think they have freedom, and they do, it is just in the physical sense. If you are connected to society in any way, it already has you , from the first moment you realize that there are other people in this world, it has you. People are so focused on watching the same actors perform numerous roles on television. They listen to the news which is shaped and molded to the journalist's perpective. Tehy are focused on what opther people think of you.(If you were to go down the street dressed like you time-warped from the 1600s, don't you think you would feel even the slightest emabrrased?) Today's society is essentially defining what people do, how they act, and who they are. In ways, this can be bad (as stated above), but in ways, this can be good. It is alwys good to have some structure in you r life, and to stay connected (no matter how warped) to the news sometimes. Some people also need to have some guidance in their lives, and many times, people will direct their firedns to a good job nd a good life.
Society does have its bad parts, nd its good parts, but in order to survive, we need it, no matter how bad it may be. Today's society does need some reform (i will not elaborate, otherwise you would just want to stop reading here), and that reform is totally feasable, it just requires the acknowledgement of a majority of the people that there are problems. Society is also crucila to our government, even though it may seem corrupt nowadays (again i will not elaborate).
You do not have to conform to society, you just have to go along with it. Keep an open mind at times, and have some fun the way you want to have fun. If people look at society this way, I think we can make some great progress. But in the meantime, society is going to control in one way or another a majority of the population.

Symbolic interactionists believe that the more people hang around together, the more they begin to take on the ideals of each other. For instance, if you are religious and go to church on a regular basis, you will adopt the ideas and mores of that particular religion.
The labelling theory believes that when you label someone, they take on the role of that label. For instance, if you label someone a spousal abuser, then they will continue to abuse their spouse.
However, deterrent theory states that when you punish someone for doing something, they stop. For instance, if someone is arrested for abusing their spouse, the shame of being arrested will be enough to make them stop.
Lots of different theories!

Well, Hollywood definitely affects people's brains! People see these movie stars living supposedly glamorous lives, and beat themselves up wondering why they aren't like them. Also, you have T.V. telling people they need to be a certain way, and messes with people's brain too.
