I Think it is terribly sad for anyone to listen to Dire Straits or Mike and the Mechanics, sorry. I am 38 years old, and still try to keep up to date with good adventurous music, and Dire Straits has always bored the pants off me.

music is subjective. everyone has their own taste. dire straits were not huge in the 80s for nothing. its just like people in the 80s listening to the beatles. you are not strange.
but modern music is not rubbish, you just have not found the right type for you. there are millions of new bands out there with every type of sound. you just need to look a but further than the top 40 and boring bland radio stations that play any old crap.
-- although mike and the mechanics... eewww... (just a personal opinion... :))

I guess its a bit out of the ordinary for someone your age to be into that kind of thing but at least Dire Straits knew how to play their instruments. I agree with you that a lot of modern music is pants. Good for you for being an individual and not following the crowd.

You are not strange, just like really good music, each to there own, well done for not following the normal brigade. I am in my 40's have seen Dire straits in concert, but also like a lot of music going about toady.

It is extremely sad for anyone to listen to Dire Straits, especially their top hit "Heavy Fuel" which is particularly dire. Mike and the Mechanics aren't nearly as offensive.
It's practically a crime, however, as it's you, I'll let you off :)

You have more sense than most people. Most of the music I like is 80s stuff like OMD and Depeche Mode- older than I am.
You'll find that anything released after 1990 is just the same old stuff being released. At least you choose bands/artists who are true musicians capable of playing instruments and writing songs, which is more than can be said of many a modern band.
There is NO rule which states you have to like modern music. Just do what I do and listen to what makes you happy.

No, it's never sad to enjoy the music that you enjoy. Dire Straights produced some fantastic music, and it does not get bad just because it's old.
Don't be a sheep like your peers, it is not the law that you can only enjoy music that was released this year.
A huge chunk of my record collection was recorded before I was born, but I also have more recent stuff.
