I see people here want to oppose instinct to learning; wrong. The studies done on imitative learning and analytical learning have shown that a instinct to hunt must be coupled with a imitation of elders and a cognitive competence of the organism. All genetic influence is expressed in the environment. To say," instinct ", is analogous to the social scientists saying, "learning ", when they want a phrase that explains all, but means nothing in itself.

Lesser mental ability compared to what?? humans? other animals may not live like we do but they are equally intelligent just in different talents. Put a human and a tiger on the same hunt and the tiger is infinitely more intelligent when it comes to hunting. Now put tools in front of both and the human is infinitely more intelligent about using tools. This doesnt mean one or the other has lesser mental ability, it just means both are of different intelligence and capability. Both are driven by instinct to do what it takes to survive but instinct is not how animals learn.. most predators need to learn how to hunt from thier parents, and in fact it has been found that different individuals of the same species have different hunting techniques. They learn to concentrate, calculate and tiptoe through example and experience only the very adept survive to pass on thier skills to the next generation. A creature may know instinctively where to strike thier prey to kill it but they must learn how to catch it first, and its up to thier parents to teach them that.
