When you are trying to lead him don't pull on him, that will teach him to pull against you. You should try to put a lead rope, or lung line behind him...hold onto it and wrap it around his butt all the way to you hand again... i apologize it that was confusing. You will most likely need to get him used to the feeling of something around him, but it shouldn't take long if you have patience. When he is used to that, put a lead on him at the same time as the lunge line or lead behind him, and pull on the one behind him and lead him that way. He will get the idea of leading, without being yanked on. We did this with our yearling, and it worked well. You can always buy the book Bringing Up Baby by John Lyons..even though you have a 2yr old, it would work.... I hope this wasn't too confusing. good luck, email if you need clarification.

The best time to teach a horse to lead is before they are weaned. Then you lead the mother in front and the foal will just follow the mother while you have a lead line & halter on it. Well at two its going to be tough, try leading it behind the herd leader or if it has a buddy horse that knows how to be led, keep the buddy horse in front and lead it behind the buddy, it should naturally want to follow the other horse.

If you are by yourself, you can use a butt rope. Loop the lead around his butt and back to his head. When you pull the lead, you also apply pressure behind to encourage him to move. If you have someone helping, have them walk slowly behind while you pull on the lead. Someone approaching from the rear is incentive for them to move forward. In an emergency situation I have led a horse with their head in a bucket of feed. Food is the great encourager.

Use treats to teach him. Horses are as bad as dogs and will do almost anything for their favorite food be it carrots, apples or sugar.

You have to work with him every day. Stay away from sugar treats as is is not good for them.
