Your age could become part of the pitch, IF you are able to write your book as well as the best of the adults.

I am assuming that your work is fiction, as most similar questions here are about fiction.

Ask someone to give you a subscription to Writers Digest for a gift. Borrow and read Publishers Weekly from the library. Borrow books about writing query letters, book proposals, and doing book publicity. Read them as and before you complete your first draft.

Borrow books on crafting novels, and on the craft of editing. Read them, then read the best books likely to compete with yours in the light of what you have just learned. Now re-read your latest draft.

Rewrite your last draft using what you know about editing, writing, and publicity. There's nothing wrong with including an occasional "hook" upon which you might be able to hang some publicity. An example: if your book is science fiction, and includes a dog, have the dog entered in a future dog show. Investigate current shows a little, and think about what future tech in your story might do to them. This will allow you to get press from dog magazines and kennel clubs later, when your book is released. And it won't damage the story, if it's just background to an essential scene. I think you see what I mean?

But most of all, make sure you make your book answer the needs of your readers. If it's wish fulfillment fiction, as for example much of heroic fantasy is, then make sure you give the reader the characters with which they can identify, and the need is filled. Do it well, and covertly, within a plausible plot, and a multi-dimensional cast of characters.

Be your best, and you can achieve the goal of publication. Then the work really begins.

Good luck.

Christopher Paolini was a teenager when he published his first book, Eragon in 2003. Eldest was published in 2005. The third book will be published soon, and the movie is coming out at the end of this year or beginning of next year.

It has been a couple of years now, but the youngest published author I recall hearing about wrote a book based on the Thieves World in fantasy and he was 14 years old. I would think he is the youngest and if he could do it others can too. Good Luck!

Gordon Korman is a fantastic author, although his better books are the older ones. He wrote his first book as a 7th grade project! So, he was around 12 or 13. He has a series featuring 2 boys at a boarding school-Bruno and Boots. A great funny book of his is "I Want to Go Home!" and "No Coins Please!"
