ok, so if someone stole something from me and took it to a pawn shop, would the cops be able to trace the serial number?

Many police depts have pawn shop details whose job it is to canvas pawn shops for traceable stolen items.

Yes. The pawn shop owner might even give it back to you if you call and explain to them that they have something of yours that was stolen. If something of value is stolen from you, immediatly contact the police. That way if you find the stolen item in a pawn shop you can call the police and tell them that what you reported missing is at a pawn shop. They should help you out.

Yes....good luck getting a cop to do it though. He would have to go to the pawn shop and look at the item. You would need record of the serial number as well or else how are you going to prove that its yours based on that?

Police and pawn shops cooperate, but much depends on state and local laws. Pawn shops record serial numbers on everything they sell. Police may send pawn shops lists of items recently stolen.

Your odds are much better if it is something distinctive.

It depends on what was stolen and how reputable the pawn shop is. It's usually safe to consider the item in question permanentlly gone unless you know who took it.

They should be able to, unless the pawn shop owner is a crook too.

Of course!!! It is very easy. You just need to take a police over there so they don't think you are the stealer, and get the info. and start searching for the guy!!!
